BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 16 Western Washington University softball team dropped a 7-4 extra-inning contest Saturday against Simon Fraser University.

The game was halted in the top of the 5th inning with a 51-minute weather delay and ended with Viking Field being covered in a blanket of snow.

The Vikings dropped their second consecutive game after opening the season with 13 consecutive wins and are now 13-2 on the season. WWU was unbeaten in three previous extra-inning games.

The second game of the planned non-conference doubleheader was canceled due to the wintry mix and unplayable field conditions. The two teams will aim to complete the series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 am at Sehome High School.

Western went up 1-0 in the 1st inning when right fielder McKenna Crum led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a wild pitch.

SFU tied the game in the top of the 2nd and forged ahead with three two-out runs in the top of the 3rd inning to chase WWU starter Joie Baker from the game.

The Vikings inched back into the game in the 3rd inning on a run-scoring single by Hailey Rathand tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Senior Ashley Jacobson plated a run with a sharp groundout and Riley Anderson came up clutch with a two-out single up the middle to drive in the tying run.

After both teams were held scoreless in the 7th inning, SFU scored a trio of runs in the first extra frame off relief pitcher Kaiana Kong to take the lead. SFU freshman Monica Bourque worked around a one-out walk to set the Vikings down in the bottom of the 8th to earn the complete-game victory.

Rath finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and Emma Andrewjeski and Laila Carpenter both hit doubles for the Vikings.

SFU recorded 15 hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-4 game by second baseman Janique Balacaen.
