TACOMA, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field opened the outdoor season Friday and Saturday at the Ed Boitano Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
The Vikings sent a young squad of competitors to Tacoma with many student-athletes making their outdoor collegiate debut. WWU finished 2nd team scoring in both the men's (84 points) and women's (92 points) competition behind Whitworth.
WWU's distance crew showed its early-season team strength and depth, with the men recording six top-10 placings in the 10,000m and the women taking the first 10 spots in the 10,000m race held Friday night.
Event winners included Ryan Clough in the men's 10,000m, Ashley Reeck in the women's 10,000m, Evelyn Collins-Winn in the women's 3,000m steeplechase and Sydney Mohlman in the women's pole vault.
Mohlman recorded the No. 8 pole vault mark in program outdoor history clearing 3.61m/11-10 and Reeck clocked the No. 4 time in the 10K in 36:29.29. WWU's women's distances standouts recorded four top-10 times in the 10,000m race.
Jakob Braunstein placed 2nd in the men's javelin with a throw of 58.28m/191-2 to just miss an NCAA II qualifying mark of 58.47m.
The Vikings continue the early start to the outdoor season next weekend at the PLU Open in Tacoma, with the one-day meet held on March 9 at the PLU Track & Field Facility. The complete 2024 WWU Track & Field schedule can be viewed online at wwuvikings.com/TF.
