EUGENE, Ore. – Western Washington University junior sprinter Caitlyn Cheney recorded a pair of top-10 program marks to wrap up competition for the Vikings at the University of Oregon Preview Saturday at historic Hayward Field.
Cheney placed 5th out of 25 competitors in the 100m dash, clocking a personal-best time of 12.17 seconds to jump up to No. 4 in WWU history. Cheney also placed 6th in the 200m with a PR of 25.10 moving her up to No. 6 in program history.
Senior Ryan Greenwalt won the long jump with a season-best leap of 6.97m/22-10.5 to top the field of 12 competitors. He also placed in the middle of the pack in the 100m placing 16th in 10.95 seconds. School record holder and WWU alum Alex Donigian ran unattached placing 3rd in 10.63 seconds.
The women's 4x400 relay turned in a solid early-season time of 3:55.05 to place 2nd just behind host University of Oregon (3:53.89).
Friday's results were highlighted by Oregon native Jeret Gillingham setting WWU's record in the steeplechase with a personal-best time of 8:52.33 to place 3rd in the race of nine competitors. He finished just behind Mac Franks, a Western graduate running for Club Northwest, who ran 8:50.73 beating his previous WWU record of 8:52.50 set in 2022. Gillingham's time is No. 3 in GNAC history and the early leader in all of NCAA Division II in 2024.
