VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team continued its spring break schedule with the opening day of the UBC Open.
Junior All-American Ila Davis ran a personal-best time of 4:31.47 to place 5th amongst a stacked field of 39 competitors. Her time moved up to No. 5 in WWU history, continuing to close in on the school record of 4:29.71 set by current assistant coach Haley Stensland in 2015. Junior Sophie Wright placed 8th in 4:34.33 to just miss her PR of 4:32.59.
Junior Katie Potts won the discus with a top throw of 40.40m/132-6 and placed 2nd in the shot put with a mark of 13.29m/43-7.25.
Junior Drew Weber continued his comeback from a recent injury winning the 1500m in 3:59.56 and also raced to a 3rd-place finish in his marquee event the 800m in a time of 1:55.32.
Sophomore Jaden Johnson won the 100m dash in a PR of 11.09 seconds and placed 2nd in the 200m in 22.81 seconds. Freshman Mikko Laulainen won the triple jump (13.21m/43-4.25) and freshman Noah Turner won the shot put (15.37m/50-5.25).
A few more events remain at the UBC Open with competition wrapping up Sunday in Vancouver.
The Vikings are back in action next week to conclude spring break with select student-athletes traveling to the Bay Area to compete in the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. The complete 2024 WWU Track & Field schedule can be viewed online at wwuvikings.com/TF.
