PLEASANTON, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team got its spring season off to a solid start with an even-par team round Monday at the NNU Nighthawk Invitational at Callippi Preserve Golf Course.
Through the first 18 holds of the 36-hole tournament the Vikings are in 2nd place trailing tournament leader Cal State East Bay by four strokes (-4, 284).
The Vikings were led by a 3-under-par 69 by freshman Braxton McDonald to tie for the tournament lead. McDonald recorded two birdies and the lone eagle of the round for his lowest collegiate round.
Sophomore Peter Dionne-Yahr is tied for 6th place in the 50-player field following a 1-under-par 71 and junior Seth King is tied for 14th at 1-over-par 73. King and junior Matteo Polla both finished their rounds with a birdie to help lift the Vikings to the even-par team round.
"Braxton played really solid from beginning to end today. It was great to see him play like I know he can," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "It was a solid start to the spring season. Peter (Dionne-Yahr) was clean today and showed great commitment and confidence on his shots. It was nice to have Seth (King) and Matteo (Polla) finish with birdies to help the team score."
Cal State East Bay holds the team lead at 4-under-par 284, followed by WWU in second and Cal State San Marcos in third place one stroke back of the Vikings at 1-over-par 289.
The final round of the NNU Nighthawk Invitational tees off Tuesday morning at 8 am with the Vikings paired with Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Marcos.
