PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team wrapped up the indoor season with two more races held Saturday at the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships inside the Robert W. Plaster Center.
Senior
Marian Ledesma earned a spot on the podium placing 8th in the 800-meter race to earn First Team All-America honors. After qualifying for the final with the second-fastest time in the prelims with a lifetime indoor best 2:08.57, Ledesma clocked 2:12.23 on Saturday.
Junior
Kevin McDermott was aiming for a podium finish in the 3000m race, but got tripped up nearly midway through the race and finished 16th overall in a time of 8:27.38. Earlier during the season McDermott smashed the WWU school record running 7:59.27, a time that would have placed him on the podium in the top five. McDermott also placed 12th in Friday's 5000m race to earn Second Team All-America honors.
The women's DMR team of
Sophie Wright (1200m),
Caitlyn Cheney (400m),
Emmy Kroontje (800m) and
Ila Davis (Mile) placed 9th in a time of 11:30.31 on Friday. While just missing a podium spot by less than a second, the quartet gathered Second Team All-America honors from the USTFCCCA for the top 10 finish. WWU entered the meet with the 6th-best time in the nation this season clocking 11:27.45 at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Meet.
The Vikings will now turn their full attention to the outdoor season with the next competitions being held March 22-23 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene and March 23-24 at the UBC Invitational in Vancouver.
