LONG BEACH & AZUSA, Calif. – A pair of Western Washington University Track & Field records were broken Thursday in a pair of competitions held in Southern California.

Junior sprinter Caitlyn Cheney eclipsed the longstanding 100m women's record at the Pacific Coast Invitational in Long Beach and just before midnight junior Ryan Clough broke the 10,000m record at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa with a time of 29:35.91.

Cheney (Ellensburg, WA) broke the WWU record in the 100m dash placing 16th out of 90 runners in 11.91 seconds with an NCAA-legal +2.9 wind reading. Cheney's PR mark broke the old record of 11.93 set by Hollie Watson in 1987 and is tied for 9th-best in GNAC history. Freshman Annabelle Heiman was 40th in 12.19 seconds to tie for 5th in WWU history.

Clough (Port Orchard, WA/South Kitsap/Olympic College) finished 8th in the final heat of the 10,000m race at the Bryan Clay Invitational, crossing the finish line close to midnight. His time of 29:35.91 broke the previous record of 29:40.69 set by George Karamitsos last season, jumping up to No. 5 in GNAC history.

Junior Nolan Mickenham equaled his personal-best mark in the 100m running 10.60 seconds to tie for 26th place in the 114-runner field, which is tied for 4th-best in WWU history. Mickenham ran 10.60 seconds at the same meet last year with +3.70 wind, but Friday's mark was with only +1.5 wind. Junior Derek Fischer ran a PR in 10.82 to finish in a tie for 56th place and senior Ryan Greenwalt was 58th in 10.82 (+3.3).

Freshman Sydney Mohlman tied for 37th place in the late-finishing pole vault competition at the Pacific Coast Invitational, matching her collegiate best and No. 8 mark in WWU history clearing 3.61m/11-10.

Sophomore Jakob Braunstein placed 7th out of 25 competitors in the javelin competition at the Pacific Coast Invitational with a mark of 60.57m/198-8, falling just short of his season PR of 61.71m/202-5 and collegiate PR of 62.80m/206-0 set last year while competing at Minot State.

UNDERSTANDING WIND READINGS

For NCAA national qualifying purposes, marks up to 4.0 MPS are considered wind-legal, while the IAAF, USA Track & Field, and the rest of the world recognizes readings of 2.0 MPS and below as legal. WWU and GNAC top-10 record listings go by the NCAA qualifying regulations using marks up to 4.0 MPS.
