Preview | No. 11 Vikings Host CWU for Senior Weekend

WWU is riding current 17-game winning streak and nearing program record for wins

4/17/2024 4:22:00 PM

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 11 Western Washington University softball team returns home to Viking Field for Senior Weekend hosting in-state rival Central Washington University in a four-game GNAC series.

The Vikings bring a school-record 17-game winning streak into the series that features doubleheaders Friday and Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon each day. Free admission is offered for fans to all home games and free fan parking will be available in the C Lots each day.

WWU continued its historic season last weekend with a four-game sweep at Montana State Billings to improve to 34-4 on the season, nearing the program single-season record of 36. The Vikings are also in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 14-2 record, with eight regular-season games remaining on the schedule.

This weekend's final regular-season home games will give the program an opportunity to celebrate its four seniors – Ashley Jacobson, Hanako Hirai, Taylor Khorrami and Emily Paulson. A pregame Senior Day celebration is scheduled to start at 11:40 am prior to Saturday's doubleheader. WWU is close to clinching one of the four spots in the GNAC Softball Championships that will be held at Viking Field in Bellingham May 2-4, which means this will likely not be the final games for the seniors at home.

Western remained at No. 11 in the NFCA Coaches Poll and is listed No. 2 in the West Region via the unofficial RPI. The 34 wins are currently tied for 2nd-most in 32 seasons of program history and within two wins of matching the school record of 36 set in 2011.

The Vikings (34-4, 14-2 GNAC) and Wildcats (13-24, 8-8 GNAC) are squaring off for the first time this season. WWU leads the all-time series vs. CWU 85-76 with the recent series tied 3-3 over the last two seasons.

The current 17-game winning streak dates to March 22 when the Vikings opened a 5-0 showing at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, California, and continued with three consecutive four-game GNAC sweeps over Saint Martin's (home), Simon Fraser (road) and Montana State Billings (road). The 12-game GNAC winning streak also established a program best for consecutive conference victories.

Sophomore Hailey Rath leads the GNAC batting .388 (50-for-129), with a recent surge at the plate going 25-for-58 (.431) during the 17-game winning streak. For the season Rath has 19 extra-base hits (2B-11, 3B-2, HR-7) and ranks 2nd in the conference with a .667 slugging percentage. Senior center fielder Taylor Khorrami is batting .450 (9-for-20) over the last eight games and senior first baseman Ashley Jacobson is batting .369 overall (41-for-11) with nine doubles and seven home runs.

Junior left fielder Lexi Barcomb has also enjoyed success at the plate batting .375 (21-for-56) on the season with a current eight-game hitting streak. Third baseman Maleah Andrews is a top candidate for GNAC Freshman of the Year batting .354 (45-for-127) with 11 doubles, three triples, three home runs and leads the league with 35 runs scored and 23 walks. Junior catcher Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez is 2nd in the GNAC with 12 home runs and leads the conference with 37 RBI.

As good as the Vikings have been at the plate, they have been even better in the circle. WWU ranks 2nd in the GNAC and 14th in NCAA II with a 1.90 team ERA, and in the top 15 nationally with a 1.08 WHIP. The trio of Kaiana Kong (11-1, 1.51), Alli Kimball (12-2, 1.56) and Joie Baker (11-1, 2.20) have all recorded double-digits in wins.

Western's defense has been another key to the team success with a GNAC-best .969 fielding percentage.

Following the four-game set vs. CWU, the Vikings complete the 2024 regular season April 26-27 (Friday-Saturday) with a four-game road series at Western Oregon in Monmouth. The complete 2024 schedule, complete with links to watch games live and follow via live stats, is available at wwuvikings.com/Team32.

SERIES HISTORY VS CENTRAL WASHINGTON

The Vikings have an all-time record of 85-76 against Wildcats, with Central holding an 8-7 advantage over the last 17 meetings dating back through the 2021 season…the Vikings went 1-3 in over a four-game set against the Wildcats last season in Ellensburg, and split a four-game set last time the two teams faced off on Viking field back in 2022.

WEST REGION RANKING

The NCAA will announce their first regional softball rankings on April 17, but info provided by InkBlotSports.com shows the Vikings as having the No. 2 RPI in the West Region at .598. NATIONAL RANKING BY WEEK

The Vikings remained at No. 11 in the NFCA Division II Coaches Poll after the four-game sweep at Montana State Billings, extending the winning streak to 17 in a row. This season marks the first time WWU has ranked in program history since 2011. WWU and NNU (No. 17) are both in the national top 25 to mark the first time in recent history to have two conference teams in the top 25. RATH SELECTED AS GNAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Shortstop Hailey Rath was selected as the GNAC Softball Player of the Week for games played April 7-14. Rath earned her second conference Player of the Week award this season, also earning the honor for games played March 18-24. The Vikings have had seven GNAC Player and Pitcher of the Week awards this season, tying for second most in a single season, one short of the record eight set in 2011. In a four-game series sweep on the road at Montana State Billings, Rath put together one of the best offensive performances by a GNAC player this season batting .615 (8-for-13) with seven runs scored, four doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and a 1.615 slugging percentage. The shortstop also anchored the middle of WWU's defense committing one error in 19 chances.

EMMA GOES YARD

Junior catcher Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez is second in the GNAC with 12 home runs, already the second-most homers in a single season by a Viking in 32 years of program history. Only program all-time home run leader Emily Benson has hit more homers in a single season than Andrewjeski-Ramirez 12 home runs, recording 14 homers in 2019 for the single-season record. Here is a look at the WWU single-season HR leaders, with the Vikings 34 homers this season tied for 5th-most in program history:
