LAS CRUCES, NM – The Western Washington University men's golf team wrapped up the 2023-24 season Saturday at the West/South Central Super Regional at University Golf Course.
The Vikings made their 25th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships, extending a streak that includes every season playing in the NCAA dating back to 1998-99. The GNAC champions placed 20th in the 20-team super regional field.
Sophomore Peter Dionne-Yahr turned in a solid performance for the Vikings leading the team tying for 25th place at 3-over-par 216 with rounds of 74 (+3), 71 (E) and 71 (E) in the 108-player field.
"Peter continued his solid play this week and had a really great finish to his sophomore season," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "He has been solid all spring and he continued that this week in New Mexico. We are excited to have him back next year as an upperclassman and team leader."
Junior Matteo Polla tied for 59th at 10-over-par 223 (74-74-75) and junior Ryan Ho tied for 91st at 18-over-par 231 (75-76-80). Junior Cole Reynolds (96th) and junior Seth King (99th) rounded out the Vikings five-player lineup. Polla, King and Ho are all juniors in eligibility, but will complete their career at WWU when they graduate in June.
"It was a disappointing end to the season for these guys, but they have a lot to be proud of winning the GNAC title and advancing to regionals," added Bennett. "Seth had a solid career at WWU playing a key role in our Regional Championship last year, Matteo played his best collegiate golf this spring and Ryan tied an incredible scoring record at GNAC's. These three will be missed and thank them for their hard work and commitment to WWU."
Tournament host Western New Mexico won the regional title finishing at 2-under-par 850 as a team for a two-stroke victory over Oklahoma Christian and Colorado Christian at even-par 852. West Texas A&M (+2, 854) and Cal State Monterey Bay (+13, 865) rounded out the top five to earn a spot in the national championship tournament May 21-25 in Winter Haven, Florida.
Dylan Arthur of Colorado Christian won individual medalist honors finishing at 9-under-par 204 (72-65-67) for a two-stroke victory over runner-up Leandro Mihaich of Oklahoma Christian (-7, 69-67-70=206).
