BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The historic season for the 32nd version of the Western Washington University softball program will continue with the Vikings earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships by winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference postseason tournament title over the weekend.

WWU concluded a perfect 3-0 run through the GNAC Championships on its home Viking Field over the weekend, earning an automatic spot in the 64-team NCAA Championships. The Vikings will find out its seed and if they will host one of two four-team sub-regional Monday morning (May 6) at 7 am PT during the
NCAA Selection Show via NCAA.com.
The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA II West Regional Championships, with the
bracket announced Monday, May 6 at 7 am PT on NCAA.com. The top two teams in the final rankings will have the opportunity to serve as a host site for the opening rounds that will be played May 9-11. The regional field is split into two four-team tournaments (#4, #5, #8 travel to #1 seed, #3, #6, #7 travel to #2 seed). A super regional between the sub-regional winners will be played May 15-16 with the winner advancing to the NCAA II National Championships May 19-25 in Longwood, FloridaÂ

The Vikings will be making their sixth appearance in the NCAA Championships since joining the NCAA in 1998-99, a year after winning the first team national championship in school history at the 1998 NAIA National Championships.

Western enters the NCAA Championships with a school-record 42 wins (42-7), bettering the 36 wins by the 2011 squad that also advanced to the NCAA West Regional.

WWU is in a good position to become the first Northwest school to host an NCAA Softball Championships event.
