DuPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened the 2024-25 season with the first round of the SMU Grisham Memorial Friday at The Home Course.

 

The Vikings recorded a team score of 20-over-par 308 on the par 72 layout to sit in 6th place out of 13 teams in the two-day, 36-hole season-opening tournament.

 

WWU was paced by All-GNAC returner junior Emma Worgum and freshman Lauren J. Lee, who both shot 3-over-75 in the first round. Junior Lauren F. Lee carded a 6-over-par 78 to tie for 26th place and junior Kasey Maralack is tied for 34th at 8-over-par 80.

 

"It is great having the team back in action and I am very pleased with what I saw from this group in the first round of the season," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "Lauren J. Lee and Emma Looked very steady from start to finish, both driving the ball well and making a few clutch up-and-downs throughout the day. We will look to capitalize on a few specific holes tomorrow and hopefully put up another solid team score."

 

Western is four strokes back of 5th-place UBC Okanagan and six behind George Fox at 16-over-par and tournament host Saint Martin's which are tied for 3rd at 14-over-par. Simon Fraser leads the team standings following a 5-over-par 293, followed closely by Northwest Nazarene at 9-over-par 297.

 

Saturday's final round features an 8 am shotgun start with the Vikings set to tee off on holes 13-14-15-16. Live results can be followed via wwuvikings.com/WG_Live.
