BURNABY, B.C. – The Western Washington University men's golf team opened the 2024-25 season with a solid 3rd-place finish at the True North Classic at Riverway Golf Course.
WWU moved up the leaderboard two spots during the final day of the 54-hole tournament, finishing at 27-over-par 891. Tournament host Simon Fraser University ran away with the team title recording a 15-stroke victory over second-place University of Fraser Valley.
The tournament featured 36 holes during a marathon day of golf on Monday (nearly 11 hours) and concluded Tuesday with the final 18 holes on the par 72, 6,858-yard layout. WWU improved each round of the tournament concluding with a 5-over-par 293 Tuesday.
Western was led by junior co-captain Peter Dionne-Yahr tying for 2nd place in the 47-player field. Dionne-Yahr competed for the tournament title from wire-to-wire posting a 54-hole score of 2-under-par 214 with rounds of 71 (-1), 70 (-2) and 73 (+1) while recording 13 birdies to rank tied for 3rd in the field.
Freshman Jack Kendrick made his collegiate debut tying for 11th place at 7-over-par 223 (76-71-76) and sophomore Christopher Zamani tied for 17th at 8-over-par 224 (77-77-70). Senior co-captain Cole Reynolds (81-78-74) and sophomore Nick Ennis (79-77-77) tied for 33rd place at 17-over-par 233.
Ben Mulder of Northwest Nazarene University took home the individual title with a one-stroke victory finishing at 3-under-par 213. Dionne-Yahr, Hayden Prive (Fraser Valley) and Denby Carswell (SFU) were all tied for 2nd place.
WWU continues a busy start to the season Thursday-Friday at the SMU Bishop Invitational, with the 54-hole tournament played at The Home Course in DuPont. The Vikings then complete the 162-hole, three-tournament gauntlet next week hosting the WWU Invitational Monday-Tuesday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.

The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 25 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season. WWU placed 3rd at the 2013 national championship for the highest finish in program history and made its 10th trip to the National Championship Finals in 2023 placing 15th. The program has produced 16 NCAA All-Americans and has won 11 of 16 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 10 of 16 tournaments with Jordan Lee joining the elite list of conference champions in 2023 and nine GNAC Player of the Year awards.
