SEATTLE, Wash. – There is little question that the 2025 Western Washington University Track & Field program is ready to rewrite the record books.
Through two meets to open the indoor season the Vikings have already set eight school records and made 36 entries into the program all-time top 10 record book. Friday's action at the UW Indoor Preview at Dempsey Indoor resulted in six school records and 19 program top 10 marks.
Friday's competition was highlighted by senior sprinter
Caitlyn Cheney setting indoor school records in the 60m dash twice, first clocking 7.64 seconds in the prelims and then finishing 6th in the finals in 7.57. Her time is 5th-best in GNAC history. Cheney then broke the school record in the 200m in 24.90 seconds, besting the previous mark of 25.03 set by teammate
Bec Bennett in December and Ellie Siler in 2010. Cheney was the top finisher amongst 38 competitors in the 200m bettering the 24.97 by Madison Easter of Cal Poly.
Bennett broke her own school record in the 400m with a winning time of 54.44, bettering her mark of 54.73 set at the Spokane Invitational in December. The Australian was the top finisher in the 22-runner field littered with Division I runners, with sophomore
Kennedy Cook placing 3rd in a speedy time of 56.52.
Cheney, Cook, Bennett and
Hannah Polkinghorn led the Vikings to a 2nd-place finish behind Simon Fraser in the 4x400 relay finishing in a school record of 3:47.31 to inch ahead of their mark of 3:48.62 set in December.
Freshman
Jessica Polkinghorn, the younger sister of Hannah, re-set her own record in the shot put becoming the first Viking to pass the 14-meter mark with a throw of 14.03m/46-0.5 to place 2nd in a stacked field.
The men's team featured eight program top 10 marks, led by a school-record performance in the 400m by freshman
Isaac Ford, placing 6th out of 21 runners in a time of 48.51. Senior
Brian Le, the previous record holder, set a PR running 48.66 to finish 7th and Isaac's twin brother
