Conrad Brown wins individual medalist honors finishing tournament at 2-under-par 214

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team capped an incredible fall season winning the Otter Invitational by an 11-stroke margin at Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Course. Junior Conrad Brown earned individual medalist honors turning in a winning performance at 2-under-par 214.

The Vikings entered Tuesday's final round in first place – after completing the second round early Tuesday due to darkness on Monday – and expanded their lead firing the low round of the two-day tournament with a 9-under-par 279. Overall WWU recorded a team score of 9-over-par 873 to top second-place Colorado State Pueblo (+20, 884) by 11 strokes and third-place Cal State East Bay (+24, 888).

In four fall tournaments, the Vikings recorded a pair of third-place finishes, tied for first at the SMU Bishop Invitational and added the tournament win at the Otter Invitational. Receiving votes in the GCAA Coaches Poll, the Vikings have made a strong regional statement to earn a spot in the national top 25.

"I am really proud of the team for how they came out this fall and played great golf," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "We have a deep 10-player roster and mixed things up from tournament-to-tournament, and that pretty special to see. The guys showed up focused today and pulled away with a great team round to earn the win."

Led by Brown's winning performance – marking his first collegiate victory – the Vikings placed three players in the top 10 of the 95-player field. Tuesday's final round of 9-under-par featured all five players recording a score of par or better, led by senior captain Peter Dionne-Yahr firing a 5-under-par 67 tying for the low round by an individual in the three-round tournament.

Brown recorded three consistent rounds of par-or-better going 71 (-1), 72 (E) and 71 (-1) to finish the 54-hole tournament tied with Marius Dosiere of Colorado State-Pueblo at 2-under-par 214. Brown won a scorecard playoff for holes 18-17 going birdie/par. Brown's victory is the first by a Viking since current assistant coach David Sibbett won the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational last April.

"A fantastic and very consistent tournament performance by Conrad to enjoy the well-deserved win," added Bennett. "In four fall tournaments he turned in all 12 of his rounds at par or better…which is pretty amazing…but also a testament to his hard work and steady play."

Freshman Calvin Cakarnis finished in 6th place at 2-over-par 216 with rounds of 72 (E), 72 (E) and 74 (+2) to record the top 10 finish. Dionne-Yahr went low in the final round with his 5-under-par 67 to tie for 7th place at 3-over-par 217. Dionne-Yahr tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies, with six in the final round (and an eagle).

"Calvin is off to a great start in his collegiate career with back-to-back solid tournament finishes," said Bennett. "And what can you say about Captain Pete…awesome round today with his 5-under-par 67 which set the tone for a great team round."

Sophomore Rex Wilson tied for 26th place at 9-over-par 225 (76-78-71) and freshman Henry Kippenhan tied for 43rd at 13-over-par 229 (80-77-72).
