BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team is firing on all cylinders, capping a 2-0 start to the conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over Western Oregon University Saturday evening at Harrington Field.
The Vikings have turned their season around, winning the last four games to even the overall record at 4-4-2, and finish the first week of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a pair of wins. WWU was 0-4-2 in the first six games of the season, scoring four goals, but has rebounded with four consecutive wins scoring 12 goals during that span.
"Tonight was a great overall performance from the team to get a victory against a good Western Oregon squad," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "WOU made it difficult and challenged us. I am proud of how the team solved those challenges and adjusted to get the victory."
The Vikings got off to a quick start with a goal just over five minutes into the contest. WWU was awarded a free kick right at the six-yard box on a double kick off a goal kick by the WOU goalkeeper. Joar Tidblom took a shot off the initial touch by Edgar Serrano and blasted a shot past the entire 11-player WOU team lined up on the goal line into the upper right corner for his fifth goal of the season, all in the last three games.
WOU equalized early in the 17th minute after a restart following a yellow card on freshman Zack Robertson. The Wolves quickly moved the ball down the field with Aidan Brouddus crossing a ball into the box finding a streaking Michael Divano for a one-time finish to the far post.
WWU went back ahead in the 33rd minute with freshman Jose Perez continuing his goal-scoring binge finding the back of the net at the 32:43 mark. Senior Sebastiano Silvetti threaded a pass to Perez inside the 18-yard box, who took an initial shot at a sharp angle, and followed up the rebound with a sharp right-footed shot into the back of the net. Perez was coming off a brace in Thursday's GNAC-opening 4-0 victory over Saint Martin's.
The Vikings had another great look at an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Tidblom's header off a free kick from Reiley Buri-Brown hit the crossbar.
Western's stalwart defensive effort limited the Wolves to nine shots in the game with the lone goal the only shot on target. Freshman Sam Hough, senior Krubelle Tesfaye, Silvetti and Tidblom all logged the full 90 for position players. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Dyer was not tested in goal, but directed the backline's standout effort.
The Vikings (4-4-2, 2-0-0 GNAC) take back to the road next week with a pair of conference games traveling to play at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday (4 pm MT) and rival Seattle Pacific on Saturday (7 pm). The complete 2025 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/25_MSOC.
WWU celebrated Latine Heritage Month with several campus clubs taking part in Saturday's Latine Heritage Night at Harrington Field. Viking student-athletes donned "Los Vikings" shirts during pregame warm-ups, El Tapatio Taco Truck was serving food for fans and campus clubs served goods to raise money for the year.
