Vikings Sweep Western Oregon to Remain in First Place

Vikings improve to 17-3 overall and remain in first place tie in the GNAC at 11-2

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team continued its winning ways recording a three-set sweep over Western Oregon University Saturday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

The Vikings improved to 17-3 overall and remained in a first-place tie in the GNAC standings at 11-2 with the 25-15, 25-18, 25-13 victory over the Wolves. WWU is ranked No. 17 in the nation improving to 8-1 in Carver Gym this season following the victory.

"I really liked our approach tonight and how we came out firing," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Voss was awesome at the net and had a range tools to draw from. Caroline's serve was on point and while the stats don't count how effective they were, they put constant pressure on their passers."

WWU was led by an impressive 11-kill effort from junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl on a .714 attack percentage, also adding a team-high four blocks.

Junior outside hitter Delaney Speer contributed eight kills and nine digs and senior Devyn Oestreich tallied a team-best 14 digs to reach the 1,000-dig milestone for her career. Oestrich is now at 1,007 career digs in 83 career matches becoming the 19th player in program history to reach the career mark.

"I can't tell you how impressive Devyn's 1000 dig mark is," added Flick-Williams. "She is one of the best defenders in our conference and that is while she is doing every other part of the game. I'm so proud of her and she deserves all the praise coming her way."

Redshirt freshmen Teya Zaddack and Violet Burchak each had four block assists as the Vikings held a 9.0-to-4.0 edge in blocks.

Junior setter Caroline Hansen led the Vikings with 20 assists, with senior setter Adele Holland contributing 10 assists with the duo setting up the offense to a .308 attack percentage.

WOU (2-19, 1-12 GNAC) was led by nine kills from Maela Honma.
