No. 15 Vikings Fall to No. 12 Red Leafs in GNAC Showdown

WWU moves into four-way tie for second place in the GNAC with 12-4 conference record

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In a battle of nationally ranked programs, No. 15 Western Washington University dropped a four-set match to No. 12 Simon Fraser University Saturday in a GNAC Volleyball match on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

After opening the match with a 25-23 first-set victory, the Vikings dropped the next three sets 25-15, 26-24, 25-17 to drop consecutive matches for the first time this season. WWU moved to 18-5 overall and is in a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings at 12-4 with two regular-season matches remaining. SFU improved to 18-4 overall with the season sweep over the Vikings and is also in second place at 12-4 in GNAC play.

 

With the match tied 1-1, Western had set point in the third set leading 24-22, but the Red Leafs rattled off four consecutive points to take the set 26-24.

 

WWU lost for the first time at home since the season opener on September 4 vs. Cal Poly Pomona and dropped its first match this season when winning the opening set. The Vikings are 8-2 in Carver Gym this season.

 

The Vikings were led by double-double performances from senior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich and junior outside hitter Delaney Speer. Oestreich recorded a match-high 22.0 points with 18 kills, 15 digs, three aces and a pair of blocks to notch her 16th double-double of the season. Speer recorded her 13th double-double with 14 kills and a team-high 16 digs.

 

SFU was led by a 17-kill, 10-dig double-double by Davida Hill, 14 kills and 16 digs by Megan Hawkins and a match-high 26 digs by libero Macyn Unger.

The Vikings (18-5, 12-4 GNAC) closes out the regular season next week with a pair of home matches on WECU Court in Carver Gym. WWU hosts first-place Central Washington on Thursday (7 pm) and celebrates Senior Night on Saturday vs. Northwest Nazarene (5 pm).
