SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 6 seed Western Washington University volleyball team had its season come to a close falling to No. 3 seed Fresno Pacific University 3-0 Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Volleyball West Regional Championships.
Playing against their eight nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the Vikings were defeated by the Sunbirds in straight sets 25-17, 25-16, 15-15 inside Golden Gymnasium on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University.
Makings its 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 11th in the last 13 seasons, the Vikings finished the season with a 19-7 overall record, falling one win short of the 33rd 20-win season in program history (54 seasons).
"First off, congratulations to Fresno Pacific. They did a great job, had a great style of play and showed up today to put a lot of pressure on us," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "I think we are going to be disappointed with the way things finished, but I am really proud of the team for making it this far and returning to the tournament. That was one of our offseason goals and the players and seniors deserve a lot of credit for being the catalyst to get us here."
Junior outside hitter Delaney Speer led the Vikings with a 10-kill, 15-dig double-double – her 16th performance in 26 matches with double-digits in kills and digs. Senior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich finished her storied career with nine kills and five digs, finishing with 916 kills (20th in program history) and 1,085 digs (16th in program history).
Senior opposite Abby May contributed seven kills on a .353 hitting percentage and junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl recorded six kills and one block. Senior Adele Holland closed out her career with 12 assists, crossing the 1800-assist mark for her career to rank 13th in program history.
"We have four really great people that make up this senior class, who are caring and selfless, and have been a great leadership group," added Flick-Williams on her senior class. "Days like this are hard because you don't want it to end. But I also know from experience that today is day one of lasting friendships with this group. They are a great group and quality people that have left a lasting impact on our program."
FPU improved to 26-1 on the season advancing to the regional semifinal where they will face No. 7 seed Central Washington on Friday at 4 pm. The Sunbirds recorded a .361 attack percentage (48 kills, 9 errors, 108 attacks) for the highest mark by a WWU opponent this season.
