ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team is off to a great start during its spring-opening tournament at the Pioneer Shootout.
WWU carded a team score of 10-under-par 566 in the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament at Corica Park South to sit in 3rd place out of 17 teams. This marks the opening of the spring season for the Viking men that are ranked No. 10 in the West Region.
The Vikings were situated at the top of the leaderboard throughout the long day of golf in the Bay Area, heading into the final round in the top five of a stacked tournament field. Sonoma State leads the tournament field at 17-under-par (559) with Cal State San Marcos in 2nd place at 15-under-par (561). WWU is one stroke ahead of tournament host Cal State East Bay (-9, 567) and Simon Fraser and Chico State are tied for 5th place (-1, 575).
"A very solid start for the team today," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "I am thrilled with the scores coming out of the winter break with two team rounds in the red under par. We'll look to continue this confident play tomorrow in the final round."
Junior Peter Dionne-Yahr leads the Vikings in a tie for 3rd place in the 104-player field with rounds of 68 (-4) and 70 (-2) to record a two-round score of 6-under-par 138.

Freshman Ryan Vest had a solid start to his spring season with matching rounds of 71 to tie for 21st place at 2-under-par 142. Freshman Jack Kendrick is in a tie for 34th place at 1-over-par 145 (75-70), which featured a 2-under-par 70 in the second round to tie for the team low.
