ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team opened Tuesday's final round at the Pioneer Shootout atop the leaderboard in 3rd place, but slipped to finish 9th out of 17 teams at its spring-opening tournament.
After shooting a pair of under-par rounds on Monday, the Vikings were 19-over-par in Tuesday's final round on the par 72 Corica Park South Course to complete the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.
Junior Peter Dionne-Yahr led the Vikings finishing in a tie for 23rd-place in the 104-player field at 1-under-par 215 with rounds of 68 (-4), 70 (-2) and 77 (+5). Senior David Sibbett made his Viking debut trying for 29th place at 1-over-par 217 (70-71-76).
WWU's freshman trio of Ryan Vest (T43, +4, 220), Jack Kendrick (T45, +5, 221) and Michael Killmer (T84, +14, 230) rounded out the Vikings contingent to open the spring schedule.
Cal State San Marcos won the title among the 17-team field at 14-under-par 850 for a two-stroke victory over Sonoma State.
Greg Mouser of Cal State San Marcos held on to his first day lead to earn individual medalist honors finishing at 9-under-par 207 for a one-stroke victory over Ivan Sablan of Sonoma State.

The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 25 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season. WWU placed 3rd at the 2013 national championship for the highest finish in program history and made its 10th trip to the National Championship Finals in 2023 placing 15th. The program has produced 16 NCAA All-Americans and has won 11 of 16 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 10 of 16 tournaments with Jordan Lee joining the elite list of conference champions in 2023 and nine GNAC Player of the Year awards.
