ELLENSBUREG, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field multis group made their outdoor season debut Friday and Saturday at the Wildcat Opener at the CWU Recreation Complex.
In the men's decathlon freshman
Kaden Miller and sophomore
Owen Windrope finished 1st and 2nd in the 11 competitor field. Freshman
Joey Brown also made his 10-event debut placing 11th.
Miller finished with 5,632 points placing 3rd-or-better in five events. His winning total was highlighted by placing 2nd in the 110m hurdles (15.87), pole vault (3.64m/11-11.25) and 1500m (4:52.14).
Windrope totaled 5,418 points finishing 2nd behind Miller. His two-day performance was highlighted by winning the 1500m (4:36.51) and placing 3rd in the discus (30.06m/98-7), javelin (37.76m/123-10) and pole vault (3.54m/11-7.25).
Junior
Nicole Avery led Western in the seven-event heptathlon scoring 4,002 points, just missing her personal-best point total of 4,125 set at the 2023 GNAC Combined Championships. Avery recorded a pair of event wins pacing the nine competitor field taking first place in the long jump (5.45m/17-10.75) and 200m (27.02), and placing second in the javelin (33.05m/108-5). Her long jump mark established a career-best breaking her previous best of outdoor best of 5.30m/17-4.75 and all-time best of 5.37m/17-7.5 set at the 2025 GNAC Indoor Championships.
Sophomore
Karma Walker placed 6th with 3,293 points highlighted by winning the shot put (10.31m/33-10) and setting a PR in a winning effort in the high jump (1.58m/5-2.25).
Sophomores
Cassandra Schulberg (7th, 3,246) and
Tess King (9th, 3,110) also competed for the Vikings.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING
The Vikings swept the team titles at the 2025 GNAC Indoor Championships earning the title of conference indoor champions for the second consecutive season. Dating back to the 2022 calendar year, the WWU men have won nine of 10 possible titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor, while the women have combined for seven of 10 titles. The Western track & field and cross country program has a current string of 12 consecutive team titles across men's and women's dating back to the 2023 outdoor championships.
