PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western Washington University Track & Field program wrapped up another great season Saturday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.
WWU had seven student-athletes compete at the three-day meet, highlighted by Second Team All-America performances by
Maurice Woodring in the 400m hurdles (9th place),
Bec Bennett in the 400m (11th place),
Jessica Polkinghorn in the shot put (10th place) and
Ila Davis in the 3000m Steeplechase (10th place).
Freshman
Jessica Polkinghorn made her nationals debut in the shot put earning Second Team All-America honors placing 10th with a top throw of 14.74m/48-4.5. Polkinghorn entered the meet seeded 9th with her WWU record throw of 15.45m/50-8.25 set at the CWU Wildcat Invitational in mid-April. The freshman moved into the top 10 on her final throw of the championship, narrowly missing a spot in the final by one place.
Sophomore
Maurice Woodring placed just outside of the podium finishing 9th in the final of the 400m hurdles in a time of 51.63. Woodring earned Second Team All-America honors for his performance after entering the final seeded 7th following his school-record time of 50.95 in Thursday's preliminary race.
Senior
Kevin McDermott closed out his incredible collegiate career placing 21st in the 5000m with a time of 15:28.67. McDermott also raced in the prelims of the 1500m Thursday finishing 18th with a time of 3:57.09. McDermott was an 11-time GNAC gold medal winner across cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Junior
Jakob Braunstein made his nationals debut finishing 19th in the javelin with a top mark of 60.41m/198-2 after entering the meet seeded No. 13 with a season-best PR mark of 67.58m/221-9 set at the GNAC Championships for a bronze medal finish.
The Vikings swept the GNAC titles at the outdoor championships held May 9-10 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham, extending its string of 14 consecutive GNAC titles by the men's and women's programs in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field.
