HONOLULU – The Western Washington University volleyball team completed a perfect 4-0 trip to Hawai'i finishing the Aloha State Showdown with a 3-0 sweep over tournament co-host Hawai'i Pacific Saturday evening in the Shark Tank.
WWU won its sixth consecutive match, finishing its tough non-conference schedule with a 6-1 record. Game scores were 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 in favor of the Vikings.
Western finished the three-day tournament co-hosted by Chaminade and Hawai'i Pacific perfect at 4-0 with wins over UC Merced (3-1), No. 24 Chaminade (3-0), Hawai'i Hilo (3-1) and HPU (3-0). Junior Delaney Speer was selected as the Aloha State Showdown MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by senior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich.
"I'm proud of the team. This was a great weekend for us, learning a lot about ourselves that will be valuable experience going into conference play," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams."
The Vikings opened the first set opening a 13-1 lead that included a 7-0 run with four service aces by Oestreich. The quick start set the tone for the 3-0 sweep, but Western did have to fend off the Sharks in both the second and third sets.
Oestreich finished with 22.0 points recording a 16-kill, 16-dig double-double on a .417 attack percentage, adding five service aces. Speer tallied 16 kills on a .382 attack percentage, finishing just short of another double-double with seven digs. Senior opposite Abby May recorded eight kills on a .300 attack percentage and junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl led the team with three block assists.
The setter duo of senior Adele Holland (26 assists) and Caroline Hansen (12 assists) ran an efficient offense that recorded a .300 attack percentage.
"We played through some exhaustion today, but I thought we fought hard. The D's (Devyn and Delaney) were outstanding, and our defense did a great job of running things down. Another great team effort for the win," added Flick-Williams.
