DuPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's golf team closed out its season opening tournament with one of the lowest team rounds in program history to secure a second-place finish at the Bob Grisham Memorial Shootout.
The Vikings carded the lowest team score in Tuesday's final round at the par 72 The Home Course, recording a 3-over-par 291. It was the lowest team score in a round since 2015 when the Vikings shot a 3-under-par 285 at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate.
WWU moved up three spots on the leaderboard for the runner-up finish, placing four strokes behind Simon Fraser (+15, 591) with a two-day score of 19-over-par 291. The Vikings showed a 13-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round.
Freshman Carly Ikei and senior Lauren F. Lee tied for 2nd place in the 67-player field at 1-over-par 145. Ikei had an impressive collegiate debut with rounds of even-par 72 and 1-over-par 73 to finish one stroke back of tournament individual medalist Kiersten Saludares of Hawai'i Hilo (E, 144).
Lee has picked up where her record-breaking junior season left off with a 4-under-par 68 featuring five birdies for the lowest individual round of the tournament in the second round. Lee has recorded a round of par-or-better in six of her last seven rounds dating back to the West Regional Championship on the way to earning honorable mention All-America honors.
Arkansas State transfer Shannon Berry tied for 14th place at 7-over-par 151 (78-73), senior Kasey Maralack tied for 22nd at 10-over-par 154 (77-77) and Murray State transfer Jadyn Gracie tied for 42nd place at 16-over-par 160 (78-82).
"Talk about a special day of golf for these ladies and the program," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "They all looked so calm and collected from the start. Lauren and Carly's performance this week was fantastic to say the least, tying for second place. I witnessed some awesome golf from everyone in the lineup. From Lauren's 68 today, to Carly playing like a seasoned veteran and to Shannon playing 5-under-par through a four-hole stretch. There is lots to be proud of and build on from this season-opening tournament."

The WWU women's golf team enters its 33rd season as an intercollegiate sport in 2025-26. WWU has a rich history on the links, winning the first five GNAC Championships beginning in 2011 and returned to the podium with back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. WWU made its 12th appearance in the NCAA II West Regional Championships in 2022 after earning the GNAC's automatic bid. WWU has also made six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in nine of the 13 years it has been awarded. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has had 10 All-Americans.
