DUPONT, Wash. – The Vikings saw red – lots of red – on their scorecards Saturday wrapping up play at the Bishop Invitational hosted by Saint Martin's University at The Home Course.
Playing in its second tournament of the 2025-25 season, WWU recorded three team rounds under part to finish the two-day, 54-hole competition at 20-under-par 844 (285-281-278). Saturday's final round featured a 10-under-par 278 for the second-lowest team score of the day.
WWU and conference rival Simon Fraser finished in a tie for first place in the 15-team field, forcing a playoff to determine the tournament champion. The Vikings and Red Leafs played the 18th to open the playoff, with both teams five players tying at even par, forcing a second trip to the 18th tee. WWU played the 18th a second time at even par, with SFU at 1-under-par to win the playoff.
Adding in a third-place finish at the season-opening Wildcat Classic, the Vikings have posted six consecutive team rounds under par.
Western's five players all finished in the top 18 in the 79-player field, led by junior Conrad Brown (71-71-70) and junior Nick Ennis (73-66-73) leading the way in a tie for 8th place at 4-under-par 212. Sophomore Rex Wilson (72-71-70) and senior captain Peter Dionne-Yahr (70-74-69) tied for 11th at 3-under-par 213, and junior Christopher Zamani (72-73-69) tied for 17th at 2-under-par 214.
"Another great tournament for the boys to continue what has been a good start. There was a lot of red on the scorecards, but even more important, was how consistent the group was from the start on Friday to the great finish on Saturday," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "It would be hard to comment on just one of the players, because all five contributed across the three rounds, and to have them all in the top 18 is significant. We'll look to carry the good start into our home tournament starting Monday."
Ben Crinella of Hawai'i Hilo won individual medalist honors at 10-under-par 206 (69-68-69) with Ryan Vest of UBC Okanagan earning runner-up honors at 9-under-par 207 (69-67-71).
UBC Okanagan (286-279-284) and Westminster (281-286-282) tied for third place at 15-under-par 849 finishing just behind SFU and WWU. Hawai'i Hilo capped the top five at 14-under-par 850, turning in the low round of the tournament with a 14-under-par 274 on Saturday.
