BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Kevin Fenwick, a beloved member of the Western Washington University Department of Athletics for over 30 years, passed away Saturday evening (August 30) at the age of 61.
Fenwick served as the Vikings equipment manager and helped facilitate game operations at WWU's athletic events on campus. A friend to all, Kevin touched the hearts of everyone he met. He was often the first person to greet visiting teams and officials at events, often with his infectious smile welcoming people to campus, and would do anything he could to help Western's student-athletes, coaches and fellow staff members.
"Kevin was a huge part of the Viking family for decades and he was always willing to help others," said WWU co-Director of Athletics
Steve Brummel. "Everyone that walked through the doors at Carver Gym knew Kevin as he welcomed everyone with a smile. He was a champion for our student-athletes and a support system for our coaches. He touched the lives of too many to count and was a true Viking. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, community members and everyone associated with WWU."
A 1993 graduate of WWU with a degree in recreation, Fenwick got his start in the athletic department as a student manager for the Viking basketball and football programs. He was hired by Western Athletics in mid-June of 1994 and was named full-time Sports Equipment Manager on May 14, 1997. He received certification from the Athletics Equipment Managers Association in 1999.
Fenwick was a graduate of Centralia High School and attended Centralia Community College prior to WWU.
Fenwick was a devout husband to his wife, Lisa, and a wonderful father to his three daughters, Hannah, Rachel and Rebekah. In the community he was a volunteer with several organizations and a member of the Bellingham Covenant Church community.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent to
Bellingham Covenant Church,
WWU Athletic Scholarships or the
Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.
