Vikings Sweep Alaska Fairbanks in Carver Gym

WWU wins second consecutive home match with 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 victory

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Led by a great team blocking performance, the Western Washington University volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over the University of Alaska Fairbanks Thursday evening in GNAC play on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

WWU continued its strong start to the second half of the 18-match conference slate, improving to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in GNAC play. Following its four-set win over No. 20 Simon Fraser last Friday, the Vikings swept the Nanooks to improve to 5-1 in matches in Carver Gym this season. Game scores in the sweep vs. UAF were 25-19, 25-22, 25-23.

The Vikings out-blocked the Nanooks 12.0-to-5.0, led by seven blocks from sophomore middle Brooke Berglund and five blocks each from senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl and freshman opposite Jasmine Terry. The 12.0 blocks are fourth-most in a match this season for the Vikings.

Senior outside hitter Delaney Speer tallied her 12th double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, followed by nine kills from Terry (.350) and eight from Vossenkuhl.

"I am proud of the way we approached the match and how they got after it defensively," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Our block came up huge tonight with Voss and Brooke leading the way. Our setters did well distributing the ball which allowed our opposites to have some great swings. Great team effort to get the win tonight."

Freshman Maya Quitiquit (17 assists, 10 digs) and senior Caroline Hansen (13 assists, 2 aces, 7 digs) paced the offense with eight players recording a kill. Senior libero Finnley Claeys led four Vikings with double-digits in digs with 13 and Hansen had a pair of services aces to lead the team.

Alaska Fairbanks dropped its sixth consecutive match to fall to 11-11 overall and 3-9 in GNAC play. The Nanooks opened the season winning nine of its first 11 matches rising to has high as No. 16 in the AVCA national coaches poll. Emma Freeman recorded a match-high 12 kills on a .407 hitting percentage and Tessa Onaga had 22 digs.
