STOCKTON, Calif. – Getting a first look at the course that will serve as host for the NCAA Regional Tournament, the Western Washington University men's golf team liked what they saw.
After a slow start to the two-day, 36-hole tournament with the Vikings tied for 10th place in the 21-team field, WWU spent Tuesday moving up the leaderboard into the runner-up spot at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Western fired a final round team score of 8-under-par 280 for the second-lowest round of the day, finishing the tournament at even-par 576. Colorado State-Pueblo won the team title at 7-under-par 569 for the seven-stroke victory. WWU finished ahead of third-place Colorado Christian (+3, 579), and three teams tied for fourth place at 5-over-par 581.
Junior Rex Wilson led the Viking topping the 112-player field winning individual medalist honors with a tournament total 5-under-par 139. Wilson opened the tournament with an even-par 72 and moved up the leaderboard 14 spots with a final round 5-under-par 67 to earn a one-stroke victory. Wilson shook off a pair of double-bogeys to end his first round (was 4-under-par through 16) coming out strong in Tuesday's final round carding four birdies and an eagle in his season-low round.
Junior Conrad Brown also turned in a top-20 finish tying for 20th place at 1-over-par 145 with rounds of 75 (+3) and 70 (-2) to record his sixth consecutive top 20 finish. Senior captain Peter Dionne-Yahr tied for 29th place (+3, 147), junior Christopher Zamani tied for 39th (+5, 149) and freshman Henry Kippenhan tied for 58th place (+7, 151).
"Today was a great day for the Vikings from beginning to end," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "Every player contributed to the team's success to climb the leaderboard. I was especially pleased with how patient the team remained throughout the day. We saw plenty of quality golf shots across the lineup. Rex's round today was exceptional. Every facet of his game was working … and it showed. His performance earned him a well-deserved first-place finish. Truly an outstanding effort against a quality field."
In six tournaments so far in 2025-26, the Vikings have earned three victories (one tie for 1st), one runner-up and a pair of third-place finishes. WWU entered the Visit Stockton DII Invitational at No. 15 in the Clippd Scoreboard rankings and No. 19 in the GCAA Bushnell/Golfweek DII Coaches Poll.
