DOWNEY, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's golf team opened its spring schedule placing eighth out of 13 teams at the LA Spring Kickoff.

The Vikings competed in the two-day, 54-hole event at Rio Hondo Golf Club with Cal State LA serving as the tournament host.

WWU bounced back from a slow start to the tournament after carding an opening round score of 31-over-par 319, firing rounds of 306 (+18) and 312 (+24) to finish at 73-over-par 937.

"It wasn't the start to the spring season we were hoping for, but it was good to get the competitive juices going again after the winter break," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "We are going to focus on the positives and work hard the next couple of weeks to get ready for our next tournament."

Senior Lauren F. Lee led the Vikings tying for 26th place in the 75-player field finishing at 14-over-par 230. Lee was in the hunt for another top 10 finish playing the first two rounds at 2-over-par, before ending with a 12-over-par 84 in the final round. Lee carded a 1-under-par 71 in the second round for her fourth round at or under par this season.

Freshman Carly Ikei tied for 38th place at 20-over-par 236 (76-77-83), senior Kasey Maralack tied for 40th place at 21-over-par 237 (84-78-75) and sophomore Jadyn Gracie tied for 44th place at 23-over-par 239 (84-80-75). Maralack and Gracie led the Vikings during the final round with matching 3-over-par 75 scores.

"It was really nice to see Kasey and Jadyn play solid today to close out the tournament," added Bennett.

Point Loma earned the tournament title finishing at 2-over-par 866 for an 18-stroke victory over runner-up Cal State Monterey Bay (+20, 884). Tournament host Cal State LA was third finishing at 35-over-par 899.

Allie Nguyen of Point Loma won individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 5-under-par 211 (71-72-68) to earn a three-stroke victory over Cathy Tong of Cal State Monterey Bay (-2, 214).
