ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team opened the postseason with three athletes competing in the GNAC Combined Championships Monday and Tuesday at the CWU Recreation Complex.
Senior
Nicole Avery (Pullman, WA) represented the women's team in the seven-event heptathlon and sophomore
Kaden Miller (Cashmere, WA) and freshman
Cody Redford (Langley, WA/South Whidbey HS) competed in the 10-event decathlon.
All three athletes set personal best marks and made entries into WWU's top 10 record book.
Avery led the group placing 4th with 4,534 points to rank No. 6 in WWU outdoor history. Avery earned five points for the Viking women in next week's GNAC Outdoor Championships. The senior placed 2nd in the long jump (750 points, 5.67m/18-7.25), 3rd in the 100m Hurdles to set a PR (823 points, 15.14), 4th in the javelin (530 points, 32.81m/107-8) and set a PR in the 200m (779 points, 26.21). Avery's previous best score in the seven-event heptathlon was 4,137 points set in 2025 at the Brutus Hamilton Multi in Berkeley, California.
The men's duo of Miller (5th place, 6,181 points) and Redford (6th place, 6,128) recorded seven points towards the team total at the upcoming GNAC Outdoor Championships.
Miller recorded a PR while making his eighth start in the 10-event decathlon during his collegiate career. His 6,181 points are 8th-most in WWU history, bettering his previous PR of 5,860 while placing third at the GNAC multis last year. Miller's performance was highlighted by PR marks in the pole vault (665 points, 4.17m/13-8.25), discus (372 points, 25.26m/82-10), high jump (636 points, 1.81m/5-11.25) and long jump (727 points, 6.63m/21-9). Miller's best finish in the 10-competitor field was placing 2nd in the pole vault and 1500m (4:45.24).
Redford set a PR while competing officially in an outdoor meet for the second time during his collegiate career. His 6,128 points rank No. 9 in WWU history, highlighted by seven personal-best outdoor marks. Redford won the high jump clearing 1.90m/6-2.75 (714 points) and the 1500m with a time of 4:42.31 (666 points).
Alaska Anchorage swept the gold medals in the multi events with Vivien Liessfeld won the women's heptathlon with 4,999 points and Anders Larsen captured the men's decathlon with 6,969 points for the seventh-highest decathlon point total in GNAC history.
UP NEXT FOR THE VIKS
The Vikings are back in action next Monday-Tuesday (May 4-5) with the GNAC Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Ellensburg. Western going for its fourth consecutive women's team title and sixth consecutive men's team title.
