BURNABY, B.C. & PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team had one last chance to solidify marks to qualify for nationals over the weekend competing in the Emilie Mondor Invitational and Portland Twilight.
Senior javelin thrower
Jakob Braunstein highlighted the performances with a winning throw at the Emilie Mondor Invitational in Burnaby, B.C., solidifying his spot at nationals. Braunstein unleashed a personal-best throw of 68.54m/224-10 on his second-to-last attempt, recording the No. 2 mark in WWU history and No. 7 in the GNAC record book. Braunstein punched his ticket to nationals ranking No. 12 on the NCAA II performance list. Senior teammate
Andrew Nelson just missed his PR with a throw of 65.32m/214-4 and is ranked No. 23 in the nation with his season-best throw of 65.78m/215-10 (nationals has 22 competitors).
In the Saturday competition on Burnaby Mountain on the campus of Simon Fraser University, WWU also recorded men's event victories in the 400m (
Jackson Moffitt, 48.26), 400m Hurdles (
Corbin Herron, 53.07), Shot Put (
Connor Inman, 16.37m/53-8.5), discus (
Connor Inman, 46.73m/153-4) and hammer throw (
Angelo Ramos, 56.96m/186-10).
Women's event winners at the Emilie Mondor Invitational included the 400m Hurdles (
Ari Nguyen, 1:00.49), High Jump (
Kora Cook, 1.58m/5-2.25), Long Jump (
Griffey Caro, 5.00m/16-5), Shot Put (
Kathryn Chapin, 14.06m/46-1.5), Discus (
Azadeh Teague, 43.90m/144-0) and Hammer Throw (
Azadeh Teague, 50.94m/167-1).
The Vikings also sent a pack of distance runners to the Portland Twilight meet at Eldon and David Fix Track on the Lewis & Clark College campus. Sophomore
Nathan Reseigh placed 4th out of 61 competitors with a time of 1:59.29, just off his season/career best mark of 1:50.27 set earlier this spring at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Senior
Jared Alderfer gave one last effort to qualify for nationals in the 3,000m Steeplechase, winning the 11-competitor event in 9:02.93, just missing his season/PR of 9:00.54 set at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in early April. His time ranks No. 25 in the nation, likely just outside of a qualifying sport for nationals.
Sophomore
George Fernandez (4th, 14:30.23) and
Sten Brakstad (5th, 14:33.27), and junior
Eduardo Tobon Sanchez (36th, 15:42.75) competed in the men's 5,000m.
