BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team was clicking on all cylinders in a convincing three-set sweep over rival and No. 20 nationally ranked Central Washington University Saturday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
The Vikings concluded a perfect 2-0 start to the GNAC slate after defeating Northwest Nazarene in a five-set thriller Thursday night. WWU is 5-3 overall after winning its third consecutive match.
WWU received a total team effort in the 25-20, 25-18, 25-15 victory over the Wildcats, recording a season-high .347 hitting percentage and out-blocking CWU 10-to-5.
"I know this sounds cliché, but this was a great team effort all around. Everyone was on point with their responsibilities and executed the gameplan throughout the match," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Delaney (Speer) had another outstanding performance and our opposites (Jasmine Terry and Maren Stuber), along with Emily (Vossenkuhl) came alive. Our serve and serve-receive game were effective, which gave out setter duo the space they needed to make really good and smart choices. And our glue of the match was Brooke (Berglund)…she did all the little things adding up to big things for us. I am very proud of this group and the strides they made this week…and looking forward to getting in the gym next week to learn even more."
Western's balanced offensive attack was led by another double-double from senior pin hitter Delaney Speer, contributing 13 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double in eight matches, while hitting at a .357 clip. Jasmine Terry, a true freshman out of Rogers High School in Puyallup, tallied 11 kills for the second consecutive match while hitting .526 with only one attack error on 19 attempts.
Sophomore opposite Maren Stuber (8 kills, 3 blocks), senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl (6 kills, 4 blocks) and sophomore pin hitter Aly Skagen (8 kills) carried the bulk of the offensive load. Setters Maya Quitiquit (19 assists) and Caroline Hansen (18 assists) ran the balanced offense to perfection with the highest hitting percentage of the season. Senior libero Finnley Claeys led all players with 15 digs in the 3-0 sweep while also serving a pair of aces.
The Vikings had a quick start in the opening set building a 9-2 lead and held off a late CWU charge to win 25-20 to go up 1-0 in the match. The Wildcats led the second set 12-9 prior to the Viking going on an 8-1 run to pull ahead 17-13 and didn't look back for the 25-18 victory. The third set was tight at 10-9 with the Vikings in the lead, but an 11-1 scoring run led to the 25-15 win to close out the sweep.
CWU (4-4, 0-2 GNAC) was led by 10 kills from Corinne Westby and eight kills and 13 digs by Ellie Marble.

The Vikings (5-3, 2-0 GNAC) returns to the road next week making its final GNAC trip to Burnaby Mountain to play at Simon Fraser on Friday with a 7 pm match in West Gym. The Vikings lead the all-time series vs. CWU 81-50-1 with a 16-7 record over the last 23 matches dating back to the 2016 season. WWU travels to play the Wildcats in Ellensburg on November 12 in the final week of the regular season.
