LACEY, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team opened GNAC play with a 1-0 victory on the road at Saint Martin's Thursday afternoon.

 

The game was scoreless through the first 84 minutes before the Vikings sealed the win on a penalty kick goal by senior midfielder Edgar Serrano. Sophomore midfielder Landon Schulze drew a foul inside the box when he was spinning away from his defender after a throw-in by the Vikings. Serrano snuck his PK into the lower left corner for his team-leading fourth goal of the season – all coming from the spot.

 

Playing their fifth consecutive road game as part of a stretch of six straight contests away from Bellingham, the Vikings earned the win improving to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play. Saint Martin's dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in GNAC games.

 

"A good win on the road in a tough conference match to open the league schedule," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "Saint Martin's created problems for us on both sides of the ball. Credit to our team for finding a way to get the win."

 

Both teams attempted 12 shots in the 90-minutes contest, with the Vikings holding a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. WWU goalkeeper Quinn Sappington made four saves to record his third shutout of the season. Sappington sealed the shutout making a save in the final seconds on a free kick from just outside the box by Jonathan Wright.

 

Sophomore defender Sam Hough and junior winger Alex Martinez played the full 90 for the Vikings.
 

 

The Vikings (6-2-1, 1-0-0 GNAC) remain on the road closing out its extended road trip Saturday facing defending conference champion Western Oregon with kickoff set for 10 am in Monmouth. Edgar Serrano scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season – all coming on penalty kicks … Landon Schulze drew the foul in the box late in the game to set up the game-winning goal … WWU improved to 28-8-3 all-time vs. Saint Martin's extending its unbeaten streak to six consecutive games (5-game winning streak) … since 2018 WWU is 13-1-2 vs. the Saints.
