Vikings Finish 4th at Season Opening Tournament

Conrad Brown (T-5th) and Denby Carswell (T-9th) earn top 10 finishes to lead Vikings

9/26/2026 8:46:00 PM

DUPONT, Wash. – Led by a pair of top-10 finishes the Western Washington University men's golf team opened the 2026-27 season with a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Kevin Bishop Invitational hosted by Saint Martin's University at The Home Course.

WWU recorded team score of 2-over-par 578 in the tournament shortened to 36 holes (two rounds) due to rainy weather on Friday. The Vikings were just two strokes back of third-place Westminster and three back of second-place Colorado Christian. Cal State San Marcos earned the team title at 8-under-par 568.

Senior All-American Conrad Brown paced the Vikings lineup tying for 5th place in the 83-player field finishing at 2-under-par 142. Brown, a finalist for the NCAA Division II Jack Nicklaus Award last season, carded a 2-under-par 70 on Friday and even-par 72 in Saturday's final round. Brown's strong Friday finish included four birdies on his final five holes and played the final 14 holes at 5-under-par.

Senior transfer Denby Carswell made his WWU debut tying for 9th place at even-par 144. The All-West Region performer a year ago at Simon Fraser turned in a 2-over-par 74 on Friday and 2-under-par 70 in the final round.

Sophomore Daniel Blankenburg tied for 12th place just outside the top 10 with a solid tournament performance of 1-over-par 145. He played Friday's rain-soaked round at 1-under-par with a clean scorecard featuring 17 pars and one birdie. Senior Christopher Zamani (T34th, +4, 148) and sophomore Henry Kippenhan (T45th, +6, 150) rounded out the Vikings season-opening lineup.

"Overall, the team played very solid in the season opening tournament. Yesterday was a gutsy performance given the weather conditions," said Director of Golf Steve Card. "We just didn't make many putts or take care of our scoring opportunities. That ultimately was the difference in the tournament for us. Conrad played well after slow starts to both rounds and Denby showed why he is an all-region player. We are looking forward to getting back in action with the quick turnaround with the WWU Invitational starting Monday in Bellingham."

Bradley Mulder of Colorado Christian won individual medalist honors earning a one-stroke victory finishing at 4-under-par 140 with rounds of 72 (E) and 68 (-4).
