BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the second consecutive game the Western Washington University men's soccer team rose to the occasion defeating a top-five nationally-ranked opponent taking down No. 4 Point Loma 2-1 Thursday evening at Harrington Field.

Just five days after beating No. 5 Stanislaus State by an identical 2-1 scoreline, the Vikings improved to 3-0-0 on the season with the one-goal win over the Sea Lions in front of 438 fans on WFC Rangers Night.

The Vikings received a goal in each half, going up 1-0 on a penalty kick by senior midfielder Edgar Serrano in the 17th minute and added a key insurance goal 15 minutes into the second half from junior forward Rudy Silva in the 60th minute.

Point Loma had a decisive 22-4 advantage in total shots and 7-2 in shots on goal, but the Vikings made the most of their opportunities to open a season with three consecutive wins for the first time since 2018.

The Vikings opened the scoring in the 17th minute when sophomore forward Tommy Carroll drew a foul at the top of the 18-yard box by the Point Loma goalkeeper earning a penalty kick. Serrano calmly stepped to the spot slotting his shot to the lower left corner for his third converted PK this season.

Clinging to the 1-0 lead, Western added an insurance goal that proved to be the game-winning goal at the 59:07 mark. Sophomore midfielder Julian Herring crossed a ball into the box that was corralled by sophomore midfielder Landon Shulze. A crafty back-heal pass found Silva near the 6-yard box who finished with his left foot to the lower right corner for his first goal as a Viking.

Point Loma looked to cut into the two-goal deficit in the 78th minute on a shot by Matthew Vogel, but sophomore winger Filip Karlsson flew in front of the goal with a goal-saving clearance. The Sea Lions did find the back of the net in the 88th minute on a penalty kick goal by Simon Sagal.

WWU held off PLNU over the final two minutes to record the win, improving to 4-1-1 in the all-time series against the Sea Lions.

The Vikings (3-0-0) closes out its four-game homestand at Harrington Field to open the 2026 season hosting Westmont (1-2-1) on Saturday at 7 pm. The complete 2026 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/MSOC.
