POMONA, Calif. – The Western Washington University volleyball team completed its tough non-conference schedule with a 3-1 victory over Cal State LA Saturday at the Bronco Classic.

Set scores inside Kellogg Arena were 25-9, 15-25, 25-19, 27-25 in favor of the Vikings.

The Vikings went 3-3 during a tough non-conference schedule featuring six perennial NCAA Tournament teams, including four of the last five West Regional champions, with the Vikings being the fifth. WWU opens GNAC play next week with a pair of home matches hosting Northwest Nazarene (Thursday, 7 pm) and Central Washington (Saturday, 7 pm) on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

"I like the way we finished the tournament and think we are heading home with some valuable lessons," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "I like where we are heading into the conference season and we are looking forward to playing in front of our fans in Carver Gym."

Senior pin hitter Delaney Speer led the Vikings offensively with 12 kills and finished with 12.5 points, also contributing eight digs. Senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl, sophomore pin hitter Aly Skagen, freshman opposite Jasmine Terry and freshman middle Quinn Pedersen balanced the offensive attack with seven kills each.

Sophomore Chayse Flick-Williams anchored the defense with 15 digs and had four service aces. Terry (6), Vossenkuhl (5) and sophomore Brooke Berglund (5) formed an efficient blocking trio at the net. Senior Caroline Hansen and freshman Maya Quitiquit shared setting duties with 17 assists apiece.

"Chayse had a great match defensively and from the service line," added Flick-Williams. "And Finnley (Claeys) was solid on serve-receive."

Leading the match 2-1, the fourth set provided the match's most dramatic sequence. Cal State LA held a 14-12 lead before the Vikings answered with six consecutive points to move in front 18-14. Vossenkuhl and Speer provided key kills during the surge, while Terry and Vossenkuhl combined for a block that helped fuel the momentum swing. The Golden Eagles battled back to tie the set at 20-20 and eventually moved ahead late.

With the score tied 25-25, Speer delivered back-to-back kills, the first putting WWU ahead 26-25 and the second ending the match at 27-25. The decisive finish capped a set that featured 12 tie scores and eight lead changes.

Samarah DaCoud led Cal State LA (1-6) with a match high 16 kills, adding 11 digs for the double-double.
