BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University placed 31st among 282 NCAA Division II schools in the final 2003-04 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings released today.

Grand Valley State University (Mich.) won the Division II title for the first time after being runner-up the last two years. The Lakers accumulated 810 points, 147 ahead of second-place UC San Diego.

Western finished with 335 points, the highest total of all 10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference members. Seattle University was next at 70th with 203 points.

The Vikings were the GNAC all-sports champion for the third straight year.

Developed as a joint effort between USA TODAY and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories - NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA - with the best overall athletics program.

The 2003-04 winners in the other categories were Division I - Stanford University, Division III - Williams College (Mass.) and NAIA - Simon Fraser University.
