Longest tenured head coach in WWU history, as 2021-22 is his 35th year at the helm of the WWU Track & Field and Cross Country programs ... Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year 22 times (men's indoor track in 2005, 2006, 2013, 2014, 2019, 2020; men's outdoor track 2005, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, 2021; women's outdoor track 2009, men's cross country 2003, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2019, women's cross country 2015, 2019) ... Has coached 10 national champions in track ... Under his guidance, 101 Vikings have earned All-America honors in track and 30 in cross country, for a total of 160 total All-American awards ... In 2019, both the men's and women's cross country programs won the GNAC title advanced to the NCAA II Championships in Sacramento and the men's team repeated as GNAC indoor champions.
In 2018, both the men's and women's cross country programs advanced to the NCAA II Championships in Pittsburgh, and in 2019 both the men's indoor and outdoor track programs won the GNAC team title.
In 2015, the women's cross country team placed 6th at the NCAA II Championships, the highest finish in program history. In 2011, his women's squad placed sixth at NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the highest finish in school and GNAC history ... In 2009, his men's cross country team placed fourth at nationals, the highest finish in school history ... Directed women's cross country team to fourth place at NAIA National Championships in 1992 and women's track squad to eighth place at nationals in 1997.
Prior to stay at WWU was assistant coach for eight years at Wayland Baptist University (TX) ... During tenure at WBU, Pioneers placed second three times in men's division and twice in women's division at NAIA National Outdoor meet, and won three men's titles (1985-87) and one women's crown (1986) at NAIA National Indoor meet ... Coached 43 NAIA All-Americans at WBU ... Obtained bachelor's degree in 1981 and master's degree in 1985, both at WBU ... Also attended South Plains College (TX), being student assistant coach on Texans' squad that placed fourth at the National Junior College Outdoor meet in 1979.
Went to Moscow, Russia, during summer of 1983 to study track & field techniques in Soviet Union ... Served two years (2004-06) as president of Division II U.S. Track Coaches Association for cross country after being vice-president for two years (2002-04) ... A 1976 graduate of Brownfield (TX) High School ... Experienced mountain climber, having scaled Rainier, Baker, Shuksan, Adams, Glacier Peak, Shasta and Hood ... He and wife Maria, who was NAIA national champion javelin thrower at Wayland Baptist, have two daughters, Sarah and Laura.
