BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University placed five runners - three women and two men - on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic all-star teams announced today.
Named to the women's team were Kristin Haas (So., Port Orchard/South Kitsap), Lisa Pearl (Sr., Kenmore/Inglemoor), and Beth Rosapepe (So., Port Orchard/South Kitsap). Pearl placed 14th at the GNAC Championships.
Haas is a sociology major with a 3.51 grade point average (4.0 scale). Rosapepe is an English major with a 3.23 GPA and Pearl is a Spanish major with a 3.20 GPA.
Selected to the men's squad were Jon Carwin (Jr., Kirkland/Lake Washington) and Emil Newhouse (Sr., Snohomish). Newhouse finished 17th at the league meet.
Newhouse is a French major with a 3.70 GPA, and Carwin is a fitness/exercise science major with a 3.45 GPA.
All five runners are competing for Western this Saturday at the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Fresno, Calif.

Sixty-Eight Named To GNAC Cross Country Academic Team
SPOKANE - A total of 67 student-athletes - 38 men and 29 women - have been named to the 2002 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic cross country all-conference team.
Heading up the women's academic team are Stacy Edwards (So., Eagle River, AK) of Alaska Anchorage and Julie Thielen (Sr., Olympia, WA) of Saint Martin's. Among the men the top academic all-star is Will Smith (Sr., Canby) of Western Oregon. All three student-athletics have compiled perfect 4.00 GPAs during their academic careers.
Seattle Pacific placed the most athletes on the academic unit with 11, including seven men and four women. Alaska Anchorage (4 men, 5 women) and Western Oregon (6 men, 3 women) each placed nine athletes on the academic all-star team.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
