SEATTLE, Wash. - Alex Chursky and Nick McCluskey each scored goals as Seattle University defeated Western Washington University, 2-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer match on Saturday at Championship Field.
The Vikings fell to 7-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 league, losing for the second straight time following an eight-game unbeaten streak. They are 2-6-1 on the road this season and 5-1-1 at home.
Seattle improved to 9-4-0 overall and 4-0-0 league with its fifth win in six games. The Redhawks, who are 3-0-0 at home, blanked Western, 2-0, at Bellingham on Sept. 13.
McCluskey put Seattle on the scoreboard early with his second goal of the year off an assist from Pat Doran in the 18th minute. Doran headed a shot on goal off a corner kick that was saved by Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (So., Monroe), but McCluskey was there to put away the rebound.
Seattle's Chursky brothers than linked up for an insurance goal early in the second half. Alex received a pass from older brother Ian and was left with a one-on-one in front of the net on the right side from eight yards out. Alex beat Dragavon to the near post in the 62nd minute for his fifth goal of the year.
The Redhawks outshot Western 21-9 and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Seattle goalie Brandon Sewell made four saves in recording his fourth shutout of the year and extended his league record for career shutouts to 15.
Dragavon was credited with nine saves in the loss.
Western hosts Humboldt State University on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a GNAC contest at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.
