Vikings have biggest scoring output of season in 7-1 win over Humboldt State

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Kris Pope (So., Everett/Jackson) had two goals and two assists, all in the first half, as Western Washington University defeated Humboldt State University, 7-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer match Saturday at Civic Stadium.

The Vikings, who improved to 8-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the GNAC, snapped a two-game losing streak. Humboldt State fell to 2-18-0 and 0-6-0 with its 18th consecutive defeat.

Pope scored in the 16th minute and 35th minute, then fed David Hileman (Sr., Pasco) in the 39th minute and combined with Kory Pope to set up a Ben Robison (So., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) blast from 16 yards that made the score 4-0 less than two minutes before halftime.

Eric Blatt (Sr., Spokane/Ferris) had a pair of second-half goals for the Vikings. Blatt scored in the 55th minute, and Sean McCormick (Jr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) notched the Vikings' sixth goal less than a minute later. Blatt finished the scoring in the 72nd minute.

Karl Meyer scored the lone goal for Humboldt State in the 68th minute, dribbling through four defenders and scoring from 12 yards out.

It was the final home game for four Western seniors - Hileman, Blatt, defender Justyn Scholze (Federal Way/Decatur) and defender Joel Saulter (Edmonds/Blanchet).

The Vikings had a 19-5 edge in shots, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half.

Western ends its season Wednesday (7 p.m.) in a league contest at Seattle Pacific University.
