MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Washington University pitcher Amanda Grant (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) threw three-hit shutout and third baseman Adrienne Moore (So., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) hit two home runs as the Vikings blanked Western Oregon University, 5-0, in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at WOU Field.
The Vikings, No.8 in the latest NCAA Division II West Region rating, snapped a four-game losing streak as they improved to 23-20 overall and 13-8 in the GNAC.
Western Oregon, ranked No.7 regionally, fell to 27-15 overall and 14-5 league.
Moore became just the second player in school history to hit two home runs in a game, hitting a solo shot in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the sixth. That gives her a school-record five for the season, breaking the mark of four that she tied last year.
Moore's nine career homers rank second among Western's career leaders, three behind record-holder Carlena Herd (1999-2002).
Grant's shutout was the 17th of her career, giving her sole possession of the school record. She also set a career record for innings pitched, upping her four-year total to 492-1/3. The old mark of 491-1/3 was held by Alison Haukaas (1996-99).
Grant, who improved to 12-6, struck out four and walked two. All three of Western Oregon's hits were singles, two by Monica Allen, and just one Wolf runner advanced as far as second base.
Western Oregon pitcher Allison Sempsis (16-7) had a streak of 34-1/3 innings not allowing an earned run end in the first inning as the Vikings' Candace Adamo (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline) scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a walk.
Western's other run came in the seventh, Jodie Rock (Jr., Anacortes) drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Moore was 2-for-4 in the game, and Dani Deyette (Jr., Olympia) 2-for-3.
Grant added to two other school records she set earlier this season. She now has 47 career wins and 376 strikeouts.
The Vikings close out their regular season Saturday (2 p.m.), entertaining Seattle University in a GNAC doubleheader.
