BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Sean McCormick (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) and midfielder David Hileman (Sr., Pasco) scored second-half goals as Western Washington University defeated San Francisco University, 2-0, in a men's college soccer game Saturday night at Civic Stadium.
The triumph was the fifth straight for the Vikings, who are 5-5-1 overall. Western had lost five consecutive games prior to the winning streak. San Francisco State fell to 3-8-0.
"We're back to .500, so who knows what can happen from here," said Western assistant coach Greg Brisbon. "The guys are confident, and I think that's really the thing that makes the difference."
McCormick gave the Vikings the lead just 2:13 into the second half, taking a long pass from Justin Scholze (Sr., Federal Way/Decatur) and scoring from 10 yards out on the left side. It was the third goal in just eight shot attempts for McCormick this season, and his second game-winner of the year.
Scholze then made a critical defensive play to preserve the lead eight minutes later, clearing a shot by Gator midfielder Paul Carter off the goal line with an overhead kick.
Hileman provided an insurance goal with just over four minutes left, hammering in a free kick from 22 yards out.
The Vikings had a 17-12 edge in shots, but goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (So., Monroe) still needed to make five saves for his third shutout of the season.
Western meets Notre Dame de Namur University in a non-conference game Monday (4 p.m.).
