BURNABY, B.C. - Western Washington University was unable to score until the late in the second half as it fell 2-1 to nationally ranked Simon Fraser University in a men's college soccer game Wednesday at Terry Fox Field.
The Vikings, who suffered their second straight loss, both to nationally ranked teams, fell to 10-4-0. They began the season at 10-2-0, their best start since 1990, before losing 4-0 to NCAA Division II top-ranked Seattle U. last Sunday.
Simon Fraser, rated No.11 in the NAIA, improved to 10-2-0.
"It was a tale of two halves," said Western head coach Travis Connell. "They executed extremely well in the first half, and we played courageously in the second."
The Clan scored in the first minute as Robbie Cairns lobbed the ball into the net from the left side, Brendan Stabeno getting an assist. Andrew Corazza put Simon Fraser in front, 2-0, with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute.
Western's only goal came in the 81st minute as Ryan Hopp (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) scored on a penalty kick. It was the 13th goal of the season for Hopp, who ranks 20th nationally in that category.
Simon Fraser had a 14-7 advantage in shots.
Connell had praise for the play of midfielders Filomon Afenegus (Jr., Spokane/North Central) and David Schlesinger (Sr., Missoula, MT/Big Sky).
Western hosts NCAA II No.11 Seattle Pacific on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).
