Oct. 17, 2004

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Freshman forward Jeff Hallanbeck scored in the 59th minute, lifting nationally ranked Seattle Pacific University to a 1-0 victory over Western Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday at Civic Stadium.

The loss was the third straight for the Vikings, who fell to 10-5-0 overall, 1-2-0 in the GNAC. All three losses in the skid have come against nationally ranked teams. Seattle Pacific, ranked No.11 nationally in NSCAA/NCAA Division II, improved to 10-2-1 overall, 3-1-0 in conference play.

The goal came somewhat against the run of play, as Seattle Pacific had controlled much of the first half, when it had an 8-3 advantage in shots, but Western had most of the good chances after halftime.

Falcon defender David Selby started the scoring play, launching a free kick from behind the midfield line to just inside the penalty area, where Brent Egbert flicked it past onrushing Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Jr., Monroe) to Hallanbeck, who finished from six yards out.

Western had a number of chances to tie, including two less than a minute apart. In the 74th minute, Kory Pope (Jr., Everett/Jackson) had a volley from 15 yards that forced a save from Seattle Pacific goalkeeper James Ward, and shortly after that, Filomon Afenegus (Jr., Spokane/North Central) had a shot from the top of the penalty area that deflected wide.

The Vikings had a 14-12 edge in shots, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half.

"Both teams had lots of chances, that's usually the way things are when we play each other," said Western coach Travis Connell. "They capitalized off one of our mistakes, that was the difference in game. I'm proud of how we come back in second half and played better, but that's two games in a row we haven't started well. We need to improve that to get better results."

Western visits Evergreen State for a non-league contest Thurs., Oct. 21 (4 p.m.).
