BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Third baseman Adrienne Moore (Jr., Lake Forest/Park) hit a game-ending two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Western Washington University a hard-fought 6-5 win over Western Oregon University in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Viking Field.
The Vikings, who led 4-0 early in the game, improved to 21-23 overall and 10-13 in league play with their third straight victory and their fourth win in the last five games.
Western Oregon, which rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on a leadoff home run by Andi Kohlmeyer, dropped to 18-27 overall and 13-10 in GNAC action. The Wolves entered the day having won 14 of their last 18 games.
Western had 12 hits, its third straight game with 10 or more.
In the first inning, Jodie Rock (Sr., Anacortes) hit her school-record 13th career triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Megan McPhee (Jr., Anacortes). The Vikings scored two in the second on a run-scoring double by Nicole Walker (Fr., Kenmore/Juanita) and a RBI single by Charity Harmeson (Sr., Oxnard, CA), and one in the fourth.
Western Oregon, which had a 14-hit attack, came back to tie the score at 4-4 on a home run by Hannah James, her third of the season, in the fourth; a sacrifice fly by Andi Kohlmeyer in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly by Jocelyn Tamayo and bases-loaded infield hit by Morgan Huffstutter in the sixth.
Kohlmeyer gave the Wolves a 5-4 lead in the seventh with her third home run of the year.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Western's McPhee and Dani Deyette (Sr., Olympia) had back-to-back singles, and Moore ended the game with a blast to the top of the centerfield fence that was inches away from being a walk-off home run.
Western's Sarah Arnold (Fr., Vancouver/Evergreen) (6-8) got the win in relief, replacing Jackie Quint (Fr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) with no outs in the sixth.
Amanda Johnson (8-9), who has won eight of her last 11 decisions, got the loss for Western Oregon.
Moore was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the Vikings, who also got two hits each from Deyette and Walker.
Huffstutter and Lyndia Foster each were 3-for-4 for Western Oregon, and James was 2-for-3.
Today's nightcap ends Western's season.
