MONMOUTH, Ore. - Seven Western Washington University athletes won events, three for the second straight year, as the Vikings placed second in the men's division and third in the women's division at the third annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday at McArthur Field on the campus of Western Oregon University.

Host Western Oregon won its ninth straight league title in the men's division with 253-1/2 points. The Vikings had 197-1/2 and Central Washington was third with 183.

Western Oregon took its second consecutive women's crown with 231-1/2 points. Seattle Pacific was second with 216-1/2. Western had 149-1/2 and Central was fourth with 132-1/2.

"I'm elated," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "It's a repeat of last year. Both of our teams competed so well. I've got some great kids who like to compete."

"We were down a little bit in a couple of places, but it was made up very well in other places."

Successfully defending individual titles for Western were Melissa Behrens (Sr., Redmond/Eastlake) in the women's 100 meters (12.73), Jessica Telleria (So., Boise, ID/Capital) in the women's discus (140-7), and Jeff Word (So., Sequim) in the men's high jump as he cleared a meet record height of 6-6 3/4, his personal best.

Word led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Vikings in the high jump, winning on the basis of fewer misses. Julius Defour (So., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) was second, also going a personal best 6-6 3/4, and Zak Ernst (So., Bellingham/Squalicum) was third (6-4 3/4).

"I knew it could happen, but you never know in that event," Halsell said. "It was a big plus for us."

Behrens ran the anchor leg on Western's 4x100 relay that placed third in a season-best time of 49.64, and was fourth in the 200 (26.50).

Danielle Juarez (Sr., Olympia/North Thurston) upped her provisional national qualifying mark to 12-2 3/4 in winning the women's pole vault. She sat out last season with an injury after being the GNAC champion in 2002.

Also winning events for the Vikings were Sam Brancheau (Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) in the men's 800 (1:56.70), Laura Trevellyan (Fr., Vashon/Vashon Island) in the women's 5,000 (17:48.65) and Justin Brewer (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) in the men's javelin (187-5). Trevellyan, who has been bothered by tendonitis, has now met the provisional standard in both the 5,000 and 10,000.

Western's Kurt Hartmaier (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond) was second in the men's 3,000 steeplechase with a provisional national qualifying time of 9:17.57 and third in 1,500 (3:59.79). Stacey Hopkins (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake) was runner-up in the women's javelin (140-0), as was Ashley Vanoeveren (So., Fall City/Mount Si) in the women's discus (129-2).

Two Vikings were third in two events, Adam Neff (Fr., White Salmon/Columbia) in the men's 200 (22.65) and 400 (49.36) and Tom Farris (Sr., Issaquah) in the men's hammer (146-9) and discus (150-1). Neff also ran a leg on the third-place 4x400 relay (3:21.45).

Also placing third for Western were Jacob Petz (So., Pullman) in the men's 100 (11.33), Charlie Tribe (Fr., Missoula, MT/Sentinel) in the men's pole vault (14-1 1/4), Tammy Carlson (Jr., Ridgefield) in women's shot put (40-5) and Kim Bascom (Fr., Camano Island/Stanwood) in the women's triple jump (36-0). Petz also anchored the third-place 4x100 relay (42.98).

Laura Burch (Jr., McMinnville, OR) and Kara Fischer (Fr., East Wenatchee, Eastmont) were on the third-place 4x400 relay (4:02.12) as well as the 4x100 quartet.

Western Oregon's Isaac Frederick and Monica Smith were the respective Male and Female Athletes of the Meet. The Wolves' Mike Johnson was named both the men's and women's GNAC Coach of the Year.

Frederick, who also took outstanding athlete honors at last year's meet and at the 2004 indoor championships, swept the 200 and 400 events with times of 22.12 and 48.26. His 400 time was just .02 seconds off his own meet record.

Smith, who placed fourth last month in the heptathlon, won the high jump with a meet record mark of 5-6 and also won the 100 hurdles in 14.75. She also finished third in both the 100 (12.88) and 200 (26.25).

In addition to Frederick and Smith, Central's Terran Legard and Western Oregon's Katy Kociemba and Sam Hobbs each won two individual events.

Legard swept the women's 200 and 400 meter titles in times of 25.53 and a meet-record 55.98, respectively. Kociemba won the women's long jump with a meet record mark of 18-2 1/2 and also won the triple jump with a leap of 36-11 1/2. She also finished fourth in the 100 (13.00) and sixth in the 200 (26.76).

Hobbs won the men's two hurdle events, posting a time of 15.18 in the 110 highs and 53.95 in the 400 hurdles. Central's Michael Morrison, the conference decathlon champion, finished second in both races.

There were a total of 11 meet records and one conference record established in the meet. Central's Justin Lawrence set both conference and meet records in the men's triple jump with a mark of 49-11.

In addition to Lawrence, Smith, Legard and Kociemba, meet records were broken by Kelly Fullerton of Seattle U. in the women's steeplechase (11:05.27), Nate Normandin of Alaska Anchorage in the men's steeplechase (9:16.72), Word and DeFour in the high jump, and Central's Joe Smith in the long jump (23-2).

Three relay teams also set records. Seattle Pacific set a new mark in the women's 4x100 with a winning time of 47.87 and Central set new meet marks in both the men's 4x100 (41.72) and 4x400 (3:17.61).
