BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Garen Bedoyan scored in the 79th minute, lifting Warner Pacific College to a 1-0 victory over Western Washington University in a men's college soccer game Thursday at Civic Stadium. It was the season opener for both schools. Bedoyan had a shot saved from close range by Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Jr., Monroe), but bundled in the rebound from five yards out for the game's only goal. Western, which was opening its season at home for the first time since 1998, didn't get off a shot attempt after the score. "We didn't play well," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We were overconfident, we were not mentally prepared for our opponent, and they made us pay. We got away from our strengths. We started kicking balls up field and not moving. I hope this is as bad as we can play." Although shots were even at 13-13 for the game, the Vikings had the better chances to score through the first 78 minutes. Forward Ryan Hopp (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) volleyed home a cross from midfielder Filomon Afenegus (Jr., Spokane/North Central) late in the first half, only to have the goal disallowed by an offside call, and a shot by midfielder Jeff Lane (Sr., Yakima/West Valley) hit the crossbar in the 63rd minute. Bedoyan was an honorable mention NAIA All-American last year, notching 14 goals and 16 assists. Western, which is now 1-7-3 in its last 11 season openers, hosts Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday (8 p.m.) at Civic Stadium.
