BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Jeff Lane (Sr., Yakima/West Valley) scored 80 seconds into the second half, giving Western Washington University a 2-1 win over Pacific Lutheran University in men's college soccer Monday at Civic Stadium.
The Vikings, who won their fourth consecutive game, improved to 7-2-0 overall. Pacific Lutheran fell to 1-5-1.
The score was tied 1-1 at halftime. But Lane entered the game at the start of the second half and almost immediately scored, tapping in a low cross from the right by forward Ryan Hopp (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck).
Pacific Lutheran had its best chance to tie in the 65th minute, as a hard shot from Matt Webb forced a save by Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Jr., Monroe), and the rebound fell to Kevin Murray, whose shot was deflected just wide by a Viking defender.
"It was a good effort against a good team, good enough to win, but we weren't real sharp," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We didn't execute the way we need to."
Western had opened the scoring in the 19th minute, when forward Nick Webb (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) got to the far post to head in a cross from the left by defender Kory Pope (Jr., Everett/Jackson).
The Lutes leveled the score less than two minutes later, as a long free kick from Matt Taler slipped through the Western defense and found Mike Ferguson, who scored from six yards out.
Western had an 18-8 edge in shots.
"We did create some good chances, and we were much better in the second half," Connell said. "Jeff Lane came in the game and we played quicker, which created more space and more chances."
The Vikings do not play again until Mon., Sept. 27 (7 p.m.) when they host Montana State-Billings in a non-league contest.
