SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University was held scoreless for the fifth time in its last six games, falling 4-0 to Seattle University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Sunday at Championship Field.
The Vikings fell to 2-13-1 overall and 0-4-0 in GNAC play.
Seattle, which clinched its fourth GNAC title in five years, improved to 12-4-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league action. It is the third consecutive GNAC title for the Redhawks, who posted their 17th consecutive conference win, the seventh-best streak in NCAA Division II history.
"They're much better than when we played them the first time this season (lost 3-0 at Bellingham on Sept. 24)," said Western coach Travis Connell.
"We did create some good chances. Kris (Pope, Sr., Everett/Cascade) had a good chance to score in the first half, and Gus (Zadra, Jr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) had a chance in the second half. They were really good looks at the goal."
Seattle's Cameron Weaver began the scoring with his ninth goal of the season in the 23rd minute off a corner kick by Santa Maria Rivera. Just over a minute later Nick McCluskey found the net, Weaver and Rivera getting assists.
Adam Jensen made it 3-0 for the Redhawks, 7:24 into the second half, on a header with Bobby McAlister and Alex Chursky being credited with assists. McCluskey got his second goal of the contest in the 69th minute on a cross from Jason Cascio.
"I think all seven of their goals against us this season came off a corner or some type of restart," Connell said. "They have these tall guys who get in the air and win headers and it's hard for us to defend."
Seattle had a 22-9 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Sr., Monroe) was credited with four saves.
Western travels to Phoenix, Ari., this weekend, where it will meet Cal State San Bernardino on Friday (2:30 p.m.) and Grand Canyon University on Sunday (4 p.m.).
